Just popping in to note that I finished reading:
4.) Chronicles of Chrestomanci Volume One by Diana Wynne Jones
It was pretty darn good. Much longer than the other books I was reading before, plus it took even longer to read, because my mom was visiting, which means no reading/quiet time. My biggest complaint would be that the author really throws around the terms “savages” & “heathens” quite often, which I truly detest. To me, the words bring about ideas of cultural, religious, or even racial superiority & hierarchy, as if one group can be more “advanced”, no matter what the context. Since the books I’ve read by her so far seem to usually take place in a pseudo-British otherworld, the whole British Empire/colonialism thing just stews uncomfortably in my head all the while. I dunno.
